Good information. Hopefully the state of Washington still provides that infection data on its website. "Swedish Medical Center"...interesting hospital name...

I am working on assignment 7 - looking for articles to support my problem statement, working on the purpose of the study etc. I just spent some time searching for articles & other resources in the NCU library. I found some good articles.

I am liking the topic more and more. I found one article on the bundling of strategies to prevent infection control / improve hand hygiene compliance. The authors referred to this as multimodal strategies. Of course, this reminded me of a paper I completed on multimodal biometrics for mobile privacy and security (paper: http://www.slideshare.net/FahmeenaOdettaMoore/moorefmis70004bfinal). I liked that topic a lot!

The long version of my data mining paper using baseball data:
http://www.slideshare.net/FahmeenaOdettaMoore/moorefmis70006bfinal.
(the professor sent it back for me to remove the appendix & meet the 2-3 page requirements).

I actually found research that used the same data:

Article: Compensation and performance in Major League Baseball: Evidence from salary dispersion and team performance
By Tao, Y., Chuang, H., & Lin, E. S.

Maybe I should do something similar with healthcare data. Interesting!

Moving on to Quantitative Study

This week, I move on to quantitative research. One option is to modify the previous research questions used for the qualitative study (& continue to look at the same research topic and problem). Another is to develop new research questions. I decided to develop new questions for a related problem. Should be interesting...

Work continues.

Today, I received feedback on assignment 5 from the professor. I will now incorporate into assignment 6. Starting work on that assignment - a proposal for a qualitative project.
Next week it is on to quantitative.

I looked some more but did not find much research on applying lessons from successful employee compliance stories/experiences to other industries/occupations.

Some of my searches:

Thinking of making changes...

I am thinking of changing one area. Instead of interviewing finance and IT non-managerial employees, I could interview managers (this comes from one of the papers I reviewed - A qualitative study of senior hospital managers' views on current and innovative strategies to improve hand hygiene). I would ask the managers whether they reviewed and considered ideas/success stories in other fields/occupations, among other questions. There is also a good case for interviewing non-managerial employees. I will think about this.

Current draft. I should have no problems completing the paper by the deadline...

A Qualitative Study on Employee Monitoring - DRAFT 7/15/2016
http://www.slideshare.net/FahmeenaOdettaMoore/moorefbtm73035-71520162

I received feedback from the professor and am currently making changes to the paper. I am basically rewriting the first sections (including details from a previous version and adding details). Should be a much stronger paper at the end.

Work continues...

I added articles/references used in papers already submitted (the "bare minimum") to both Endnote and Refworks yesterday.  I will add additional articles I discovered/read as time permits. And, of course, I will update Endnote and Refworks when I prepare new papers for the course.

Did you see my paper on selection of a reference management software? I selected Endnote but ended up using both Endnote and Refworks.

Paper: Selected Topic Areas and Reference Management System for Literature Review course
(There is a section on Selected Reference Management System at the end)

I even created an amateur video on how I transferred data from Refworks to Endnote for that assignment:

I'm making good progress with the assignment. After reading articles on "field notes," it hit me that it is very similar to audit notes / work papers in a performance audit (maybe the same thing with a different name). I have tons of experience writing interview notes, meeting notes and other notes. At one of my previous jobs, I even wrote notes (interview notes etc.) when gathering information for a flow/activity diagram.

I will spend some time putting my references in RefWorks and Endnote. I need to catch up on this. I like to be organized.

Starting work on Assignment 5

The next assignment - assignment 5 - requires additional work on the qualitative study...

I need to read more on qualitative research data collection, interviewing etc.

I found some good articles on ResearchGate:

Monitoring Employee Behavior Through the Use of Technology and Issues of Employee Privacy in America
https://www.researchgate.net/publication/276114067_Monitoring_Employee_Behavior_Through_the_Use_of_Technology_and_Issues_of_Employee_Privacy_in_America

Employee Monitoring: Evaluative Surveillance v. Privacy

Disclosure and Secrecy in Employee Monitoring
https://www.researchgate.net/publication/228189775_Disclosure_and_Secrecy_in_Employee_Monitoring

The article on disclosure got me thinking about the information hospitals provided to nurses and other healthcare workers on hand hygiene monitoring. I have to look into this of course. I don't know a lot about disclosures.

Friday, July 8, 2016

Today, I spent about 30-50 minutes coming up with supplemental research questions that are even more qualitative. I did this away from the computer. Tomorrow, I will type and complete the assignment.

Working on a first draft of Assignment 4...
https://youtu.be/c7dutBx6xI4

Work continues...

It's a new day! I am again working on my assignment. I have to focus on the qualitative approach for this assignment and I am realizing that there is more to the definition of qualitative research than I realize. Maybe the article I just scanned confused me a little....

Also, there was quite a lot of quantitative analysis in one of the articles from yesterday that used a survey to obtain information from employees.

I thought my questions were "fully" qualitative. I have to think about this some more. If they are not qualitative, I need new research questions. Work continues.

Lots of research on hand hygiene compliance

There is a lot of research out there! I found lots of information on hand hygiene compliance on the internet.

Some resources:

Book:
Making Health Care Safer II: An Updated Critical Analysis of the Evidence for Patient Safety Practices.
Chapter 8, Interventions To Improve Hand Hygiene Compliance: Brief Update Review
Elizabeth Pfoh, MPH, Sydney Dy, MD, MSc, and Cyrus Engineer, DrPH.
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK133371/

Article:
Hospital hand hygiene compliance improves with increased monitoring and immediate feedback.
Walker JL, Sistrunk WW, Higginbotham MA, Burks K, Halford L, Goddard L, Thombs LA, Austin C, Finley PJ.
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25278396

Article:
Monitoring hand hygiene: meaningless, harmful, or helpful?
Larson E
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23622747

White Paper:
Increasing Hand Hygiene Compliance with a Continuous Fully-Automated Monitoring System at Three Hospitals
http://www.hill-rom.com/globalassets/en/workflow_and_communications/hand-hygiene/compliance-white-paper_hh.pdf

I'm making good progress. I selected some articles. I now need to review each in detail.

And I am on to assignment 4...
It asks for a problem statement, statement of purpose and research questions. This means I have to refine the information I provided in assignment 3. Should be interesting.

I am currently searching for 3-5 scholarly articles to support the problem statement (as required by the assignment). There are a lot of really good articles, quite a few are prior to 2012.

I completed and submitted Assignment 3. Completing the CITI ethics in research training gave me ideas.

Paper: Ethical Issues in Research Studies

Training completed for the course:

Continued work on Assignment 3 paper...

After a break, I am now working on the paper again. A break is good. I come back to the paper with "fresh eyes." I completed the introduction section and worked on other sections in the paper.
